In 1656, southern Italy experienced a terrible plague. Bishop Alfonso Puccinelli resorted to prayers and fasting, and asked for St. Michael’s intercession.

While in prayer, he felt an earthquake as St. Michael appeared to him “in a dazzling splendor and ordered him to bless the stones of his cave, carving on them the sign of the cross and the letters ‘MA’ (Michael Archangel).

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle.  Be our safeguard against the wiles and wickedness of the devil.  Restrain him, O God, we humbly pray and do thou.  O prince of the heavenly Host, by the power of God cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin and destruction of souls.  Amen.

ON OCTOBER 13, 1884, Leo XIII had a terrible vision of the assault of the powers of Hell against Holy Mother Church, and ordered the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel to be said at the end of Mass. He also composed an Act of Exorcism and ordered it to be inserted into the Roman Ritual, and explicitly mentioned what he had seen: “The Church, the Spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, has been filled with bitterness and inebriated with poison by her crafty enemies, who have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the place where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered.”

 And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me?

On October 27th, 1845, Our Lord spoke to Sr. Marie Pierre, a Carmelite in Tours France who had been chosen by Our Lord to establish a reparatory association against the sins of blasphemy and profanation of Sunday. He said,

To you, therefore, I now give this Holy Face in the presence of My Eternal Father and in virtue of the Holy Ghost. Before all the angels and saints, I offer you this gift of My Holy countenance through the hands of my Mother and those of St. Veronica who will teach you how it must be venerated. By My Holy Face you will work wonders!"
