Our Lady of Pompeii's Miraculous 54 day Rosary Novena

We are now in the Pre-Lenten Season heading toward Sexagesima Sunday- 60 days before Lent- approximately! 


We would like to start a 54 Day Novena to the Blessed Mother to protect us during these times from spiritual illness that is epidemic in our world right now causing depression, anxiety and even suicide due to lack of Faith and Love of God ... due to a turning away from God to the devil in many cases...

We would also like to ask Our Lady to stop the Pandemic of Corona virus that seems to be threatening the world as there is such a high incidence of getting seriously ill and even dying!  We are asking you to join us in this Novena of petition to Heaven in asking and begging Our Lady to protect us!

Let's pray for the poor suffering sick in China and all those around the world who have been stricken ill with this Coronavirus!
Please ask others to join in a worldwide campaign to stop this worldwide threat upon Mankind! 

It recently was recommended by a priest to read up on and pray to Blessed Bartolo Longo - one of the main people who promoted this 54 day novena when he was alive!

Upon hearing this, I cringed as I had heard about him many years ago.  His past was disturbing despite the fact that he was on the path of canonization and had been placed there in the early part of the 20th Century because of his great sanctity.

Why would a priest recommend such a saint to take as a patron?

A Brief Biography of Bartolo Longo

Bartolo Longo was an Italian who grew up in the Catholic Faith but upon going to the University that had been infected by the Enlightenment and many other extremely anti-clerical and anti- Catholic attitudes.  Bartolo Longo was a Law student and had many friends who held these anti-Catholic beliefs and moreover even delved into the occult sciences.  In short order, Bartolo was attending seances and other types of Satanic activities.  Because of his prideful nature that inclined him to want to learn things that are not for us to know....he became entranced with the demonic believing the spirits they encountered in these seances to be "angels of light" when in fact they were angels of darkness.  He wanted more and more knowledge and so he was tricked into believing that this was possible via a supernatural being other than God (as Eve once was) who enticed him into believing that the way to more knowledge could be found in giving himself over to the Devil and so in a Satanic ritual he became a priest of Satan.  He even sold his soul to him to obtain such knowledge.  What ensued was a life filled with depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, hearing voices, hallucinations, guilt etc etc etc.  He was afflicted with stomach problems and weight loss.

After about a year from the time he had his first experience with spiritualism, he was a spiritual  and psychological wreck and a physical mess and so he sought out an old professor/colleague who was still Catholic- one of the few.  His friend took one look at him after he explained his troubles and told him that if he continued on this path, he was going to end up mad in an insane asylum and not only that but he would lose his soul and go to Hell!

He implored him to renounce his past Satanic activity and sent him to a good holy Dominican priest who heard his confession and told him that he needed to come back every day and this priest would exorcise his mind every day of these thoughts and imaginations from Hell withholding absolution.  This was in May of 1865.  After one month, on the feast of the Sacred Hear on June 23, 1865, Bartolo Longo received absolution

After coming out from under this demonic influence, he knew zealous to help others like him and so he went to a seance and with a Miraculous Medal in his hands renounced the Devil and encouraged his former friends to leave the occult!

He knew that he wanted to devote his life to God and through a series of events, he was led to the impoverished town of Pompeii and there his true life's mission began.  

He did so much good work there -   He founded the shrine, orphanges for girls and boys and did many other charitable works of mercy for the rest of his life...there is not enough time or space right now to write about it.

However, one event must be mentioned that was the reason he is titled:

The Apostle of the Rosary!

One day upon walking through the very depressing town of Pompeii and seeing the poor downcast people there who had a complete lack of knowlege in the Catholic Faith despite being Catholic, he was suddenly tempted to despair as one can imagine he recalled his past life and sins (which his good priest had told him never to look back upon). However he was tempted by the devil to the sin of despair and even suicide!  However at that moment, he heard the words of his priest friend:

"If you are looking for salvation, propagate the Rosary.  It is Mary's promise: whoever propagates the Rosary will be saved."

With that he fell upon the ground and made a vow to do just that!  And the rest is history!!

"The "54-day Rosary Novena" is an uninterrupted series of Rosaries in honor of Our Lady, revealed to the incurably sick Fortuna Agrelli by Our Lady of Pompeii at Naples in 1884. For thirteen months Fortuna Agrelli had endured dreadful sufferings and torturous cramps; she had been given up by the most celebrated physicians. On February 16, 1884, the afflicted girl and her relatives commenced a novena of Rosaries. The Queen of the Holy Rosary favored her with an apparition on March 3rd. Mary, sitting upon a high throne, surrounded by luminous figures, held the divine Child on her lap, and in her hand a Rosary. The Virgin Mother and the holy Infant were clad in gold-embroidered garments. They were accompanied by St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. The throne was profusely decorated with flowers; the beauty of Our Lady was marvelous. Blessed Virgin said:

"Child, thou has invoked me by various titles and hast always obtained favors from me. Now, since thou hast called me by that title so pleasing to me, 'Queen of the Holy Rosary,' I can no longer refuse the favor thou dost petition; for this name is most precious and dear to me. Make three novenas, and thou shalt obtain all."

Once more the Queen of the Holy Rosary appeared to her and said, "Whoever desires to obtain favors from me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving." Obedient to Our Lady's invitation, Fortuna and her family completed the six novenas whereupon the young girl was restored to perfect health and her family showered with many blessings.

The Novena consists of five decades of the Rosary each day for twenty-seven days in petition; then immediately five decades each day for twenty-seven days in thanksgiving, whether or not the request has been granted.The meditations vary from day to day. Now with the new mysteries the table is changed. On the first day meditate on the Joyful Mysteries; on the second day the sorrowful Mysteries; on the third day the glorious Mysteries ; and so on thr oughout the fifty-four days.

A laborious Novena, but a Novena of Love. You who are sincere will not find it too difficult, if you really wish to obtain your request.

HOW IS THE ROSARY NOVENA PRAYED?

The Rosary Novenas require a substantial commitment. The idea is to pray five decades of the Rosary each day for twenty-seven days in petition for a particular request, followed by five decades each day for twenty-seven days in thanksgiving -- whether or not the petition was granted."
