The Conceptionist Monastery of Quito, Ecuador is one of the oldest convents in South America and the oldest Monastery for nuns in Quito. It was founded on January 13, 1577 by a group of Spanish sisters from Spain headed by the Mother Abbess Maria Taboada and a small group of founding sisters. One of the future Mother Abbesses of the Convent traveled along with them. She was the niece of Mother Maria and would someday become an abbess herself. Additionally she was the future mystic and visionary who would see the Most Holy Virgin of Good Success. Her name is Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres. It is because of her visions and Our Lady of Good Success’ message to her that we have founded this Apostolate. Read more about the Conceptionist Convent.
Carmen Alto, once the home of St. Mariana of Quito, “The Lily of Quito”, is now the residence of one of two houses of Carmelites in Colonial Quito. These Carmelites have lived here since 1653. These good sisters make a minimal income selling baked goods, candies, herbal tonics and remedies for the local people. In recent years the convent has fallen into disrepair. It is a very large piece of property to keep up. Read more about Carmen Alto.
